Suspended sentence for Donegal man at Derry Magistrate's Court

Derry Magistrates' Court

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrates' Court today for assaulting his ex-partner.

Neil Joseph McFeely (40) of Lawrence Hill in Derry admitted assaulting the woman on November 8 last year.

The court heard that police were called by the injured party who said she had been 'pushed and punched' by McFeely.

She said the defendant had tried to force his way into her flat.

The woman said that she heard banging on her door and when she answered McFeely tried to push past her and enter her flat before pushing her to the ground and punching her in the face.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said the pair had been in 'a volatile relationship' but accepted this was 'a nasty offence' for which McFeely was apologetic.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers said it was 'a serious incident' that had passed the custody threshold.

She jailed McFeely for four months.
