Halloween can be one of the busiest times of the year for emergency services and police have advised people to stay safe during the festive celebrations and report any anti-social behaviour.

Police in Derry City and Strabane have issued a reminder to people to safe this Halloween and how to get help if they need assistance from the emergency services.

As Halloween approaches, Chief Inspector Yvonne McManus said that this can be a very busy time of year for emergency services and that is not uncommon to see an increase in calls reporting a variety of concerns.

The Chief Inspector assured the public: "Our Neighbourhood and Local Policing Team officers will be on patrol to provide reassurance to local residents and businesses. Our officers will also be visiting local retailers to remind them of their obligations and carrying out operations in areas where we suspect fireworks are being sold illegally."

Of course, one the primary causes for concern for the emergency services during the Halloween period is the use of fireworks and the dangers they can pose. Chief Inspector McManus has encouraged anyone with information about the supply of illegal fireworks to contact the police.

She emphasised: "Most people are responsible, but we need to be considerate and mindful of others when it comes to marking Halloween. What might seem like harmless fun to some, may actually feel like anti-social behaviour to others."

She added that if anyone has any concerns about antisocial behaviour in their community, they can contact the police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Station Commander, Bryan McCaul, also urged people to stay safe this Halloween: "Halloween can be one of our busiest times of year so we want you to be fire aware and enjoy the Halloween celebrations."

He also expressed the dangers of fireworks, saying: "Fireworks are explosives that can set fire to property, the environment and clothing causing serious injury. If you’re using fireworks, only light them outside in an open space at arm’s length and kept well away from children."

The NIFRS Station Commander also cautioned people on the use of sparklers, something which many people give to children during the seasonal celebrations: "Sparklers can also cause injury as they burn at fierce temperatures. Never give them to children under the age of five and wear leather gloves when using them.

"If clothing catches fire STOP, DROP and ROLL to quickly put the flames out.”
