A march and rally will be held in Derry to mark the beginning of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The march will begin at Verbal Arts Centre on Bishop Street at 6.30pm on Monday, October 7. It will then proceed to Guildhall Square for a rally.
Derry IPSC spokesperson Catherine Hutton explained why the timing of this event was so important: "This march and rally will not only be in remembrance of the lives lost but a scream for justice for the people of Gaza.
"Derry people have demonstrated over the last year and for the last 50 years their unswerving support for Palestine.
"According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began.
"However, a study published in The Lancet estimates that the true death toll, including indirect deaths due to the destruction of infrastructure and health services, could exceed 186,000.
"To this grotesque death toll we now can add over 1000 Lebanese citizens carpet bombed and murdered by Israel in the last few days.
"Recent events in Lebanon have been devastating, with intense Israeli airstrikes causing over one million people to flee their homes.
"Mainstream media outlets portray Britain and America as passive onlookers, powerless to stop their ally Israel.
"This of course is nonsense. None of this bloodshed can happen without the support of the United States and Britain.
"The International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have both played crucial roles in addressing the legal aspects of this conflict.
"The ICJ has issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take all necessary steps to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza.
"While the ICC continues to investigate potential war crimes, the ICJ’s rulings should have caused the world to stage an urgent intervention to protect civilians and uphold human rights.
"Instead the Western powers have abandoned their obligations under the Genocide Convention to continue to allow the slaughter of the innocents.
"The demands of our movement have not changed in the last year.
"We demand an immediate cessation of hostilities and protection of civilians. We demand unimpeded access to humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We demand that the Israeli State is held fully accountable for their actions.
"The United States, Britain and the European Union must begin to act within International Law and meet their obligations under The Genocide Convention.
"We demand that there are no more arms sales to Israel"
Ms Hutton concluded: "We call on the people of Derry to mark a year of slaughter and take to streets to show that Derry people stand against genocide.
"We can never allow these crimes to be forgiven or forgotten."
