A registered sex offender has been jailed at Derry Magistrates Court for breaching the notification conditions of the sexual offenders act and possession of cannabis.

Terrance Halvey (45) of no fixed abode was arrested on September 15 after police found him sleeping on Asylum Road in Derry.

Police noticed a strong smell of cannabis and, upon searching, found a small amount.

Halvey was on the sex offenders register following offences in Dublin in 2014. As a result, he was required to notify police of any change of address.

The court heard that Halvey had been released on September 6 and had not notified police of any address.

Defense solicitor Garrett Greene said that Halvey is 'struggling with homelessness' and the issues that arise from it, telling the court said he couldn't notify police because he didn't have an address.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that the defendant should have registered with the Housing Executive but had failed to do so.

He was sentenced to two months in custody.
