Suspended sentence for Belfast man who assaulted his son outside Derry PSNI station

Rowdy scenes at Derry Magistrate's Court as anti lock down protesters disrupted proceedings

Derry Magistrate's Court

Derry Magistrate's Court today was shown footage of an incident outside the Strand Road PSNI Station where a man assaulted his son.

Paul Weir (47) with an address at Manor Street in Belfast had denied the assault charge that was said to have occurred on May 1 2021.

The court was shown CCTV footage in which the injured party could be seen at the pedestrian door at the police station.

Weir was seen approaching and an altercation took place before several police officers intervened.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott argued that the charge should be one of disorderly behaviour rather than assault.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that the defendant was 'clearly the aggressor' and described his behaviour as 'extremely aggressive and appalling'.

He convicted Weir of the charge of assault.

Mr MacDermott said that this incident occurred in 2021 and Judge McElholm asked had Weir 'grown up in the meantime'?

Weir was sentenced to 3 months in prison suspended for 18 months.
