Housing Executive tenants in Fern Park in the Galliagh area of Derry are reaping the rewards of a major retrofit investment programme, totalling almost half a million pounds.

Thermal improvements including external wall insulation, new double glazed PVC windows and roof upgrades have been completed at 24 Housing Executive properties in the area as part of a substantial retrofit scheme.

Already, tenants are feeling the benefits, both to their comfort inside their homes and their wallets and purses as the upgrades help reduce fuel poverty.

One tenant already benefitting is Annmarie Nixon, a tenant of 12 years, who said: “I’m saving a fortune on gas, I would say my gas bill has halved since getting this work done.

“All my old wooden framed windows were taken out and new double glazed PVC windows put in, new slates were put on the roof and the exterior of the house was wrapped in insulation.

“The workmen were fantastic and such tidy workers too.

“Coming into my flat at night and feeling warm does my heart good and I also don’t hear much noise from outside, which is great.

“When I drive into my street and see my house now, I just feel so proud to live there. It looks stunning.”

Martina Forrest, Housing Executive Team Leader, Collon Terrace said: “Myself and my team are delighted that this scheme was completed in our area.

“We worked continuously with our tenants to give information and support throughout the project.

“As a Manager for Collon area I look forward to continuing to provide similar scheme services within our area in the future.

“Well done to all involved and a big thank you to our tenants for their patience.”
