Two men have been arrested following a spate of incidents, including the highjacking of a car, in Bridgend on Sunday night.

Two men in their 20s were arrested in the Dublin area after gardaí located a grey Seat Altea with a Northern Ireland registration which was hijacked in Bridgend at around 8.30pm on Sunday.

Buncrana Garda superintendent Shaun Grant said the two males were found with the hijacked car and were arrested on suspicion of possession of offensive weapons.

“That car has been recovered and two males have been arrested and remain in Garda custody in a Dublin city station,” he said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Grant said inquiries are ongoing and there is a continuing appeal for witnesses to the incident.

“One line of inquiry is that these incidents may be related to a familial feud emanating in Derry city,” he said.

The incidents took place close to the Donegal-Derry border. It is believed that vehicles were damaged by a gang wielding weapons.

A Garda cordon remained at a business premises in the border village on Monday morning. Gardaí are particularly appealing to those with video footage, including dash-cam, from the Bridgend area between 8.15pm and 8.45pm, to make contact.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Burnfoot Garda Station on (074) 9368194, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
