Derry Magistrates Court
A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates Court for stealing a Samaritans charity box.
Robert Norton, 40, of no fixed abode, was charged with stealing the box from the Housing Executive Office on November 7.
The box, containing approximately £7, was first noticed missing on November 13 and CCTV later showed that it was taken on the 7th by Norton, a regular in the building.
Upon going back to the office, Norton was arrested for the theft.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott told the court that this was an 'opportunistic' theft and that 'desperation' played a part in it.
He added that Norton was originally form England and was unable to get accommodation, also saying that he had a number of health problems.
He was sentenced to two months in custody, suspended for two years.
