Derry Court: Man (51) described as 'violent individual' jailed for domestic assaults

Man returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on 28 charges

A man described by a judge as a 'violent individual who is a danger to this woman' has been jailed for a year at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Robert Nelson (51) of Milltown View in Drumahoe admitted a series of charges including two assaults and two breaches of a Restraining Order.

The court heard that on December 26 police were called and the injured party reported her former partner, Nelson, had pulled her by the hair and punched her in the face.

Bruising could be seen on the woman's left eye.

The court heard that there was a Restraining Order in place until December 2024 forbidding Nelson from harassing the woman.

The court then heard that on February 18 the woman contacted police to say that Nelson had attended her address and become abusive before punching her in the face.

As police were speaking to the woman the defendant turned up at her back door and was arrested.

Defence counsel Sinead Rogan said that this had been a 30 year relationship marred by a breakdown.

She said that Nelson 'knows this behaviour can't continue'.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that Nelson was in breach of suspended sentences imposed some weeks before these offences.

He said the defendant shows 'a total disregard' for court orders or suspended sentences and described him as a violent individual.

He imposed a sentence of 12 months and extended the Restraining Order until December 2028.
