Derry Magistrate's Court

Derry Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday how a man was arrested after police investigated reports of someone running about with a machete in Clooney Terrace in the city because 'his mouth got the better of him.'

Jason Murphy (31) of Dennet Gardens in Derry admitted three charges that occurred on June 19.

He admitted disorderly behaviour in Clooney Terrace, possessing cocaine and resisting police on June 19.

The court heard that police were told about someone 'running about' with a machete.

When they went to investigate they came across Murphy outside the address shouting.

Police approached him and he became aggressive and started shouting calling police 'black b-----s' and saying 'you should be blown up'.

A quantity of suspected cocaine was found on him.

He told police he was 'in shock' due to the person with the machete running past him.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that he had been told it was a Samurai sword rather than a machete but there was no suggestion this man had anything to do with it.

He said Murphy had recently been released from custody and had a relevant record.

The solicitor said that Murphy had 'taken umbrage' with police due to their failure to deal with the other person.

He said that the abuse aimed at police was not aggravated by racial hostility as police were called black b-----s for years. District Judge Barney McElholm said there was no violence and it was more 'bad behaviour'.

Murphy was sentenced to three months in custody suspended for 18 months.
