Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a man was controlling over his partner not allowing her to meet people.
Thomas Rush (39) of Glengalliagh Park in Derry admitted a charge of assault that occurred on January 2 this year and engaging in a course of action that constituted domestic abuse between February 21 last year and January 3 this year.
The court heard that police were called by a third party to a domestic incident.
The injured party said that at 5am her partner Rush had assaulted her by pinning her to the floor and trying to strangle her.
She managed to escape and made her way to a neighbour's house.
She also told police that Rush prevented her from using her phone and tried to control her.
At interview the defendant denied the allegations and said he acted in self defence.
Defence counsel Sean Doherty said his client had very little recollection of the incident.
Rush was jailed for 6 months.
