Derry Magistrate's Court

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court for an incident in Derry City Centre.

Emmet Smith (28) whose address was given as c/o Maghaberry Prison admitted charges of disorderly behaviour, assault on police and possessing drugs on September 5 last year.

The court heard that police were called to a report of men fighting in Waterloo Place and when they arrived they found Smith being restrained on the ground.

He became aggressive towards police and was taken to hospital.

While there he was seen to try and swallow a bag of blue tablets.

At interview he said he had no recollection of what happened and admitted the tablets were Diazepam which he said he had bought on the Internet for 20 pence a tablet.

He apologised for the incident with police.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that his client had received a 'significant sentence' in the Crown Court.

He was jailed for 3 months.
