New step on menopausal health in workplaces welcomed

The announcement by the British Standards Institute it has developed a new standard on menstrual and menopausal health in the workplace has been welcomed by Derry City and Strabane District Councillor Lilian Seenoi Barr .

Cllr Barr said: "It is very welcome to see further progress made when it comes to menstrual and menopausal heath in the workplace. This new standard will address issues like awareness of menstruation and menopause in the workplace and how businesses can create a workplace environment for everyone.

“Last year, I was very proud to secure the support of Derry City and Strabane District Council for paid menstrual leave. Too often, women’s health is only spoken about in whispers and there is still an urgent need to break the stigma when it comes to issues like menstruation and the menopause, including in the workplace.

“These issues can cause debilitating pain for women and can have a really profound impact on their working life. Places around the world are starting to take action on these issues and recognise how we can make sure everyone has full access to the labour market.

“I know that the people of Derry want principled and progressive politicians who are going to stand up for everyone in the community, regardless of gender. I will be following developments closely to see what we can learn about best practice when it comes to this issue. The women of Derry deserve no less than women in every other part of these islands when it comes to their healthcare.”
