Derry pupils awarded OCN certificates

Proud parents watched on at St. Eugene’s Primary School this week as their P7 children received OCN Endorsed ‘Positive Me’ programme certificates from the city and district’s Deputy Mayor, Angela Dobbins.

The twenty pupils completed the programme, funded by the Right Time, Right Place Mental Health Service over a number of weeks under the tutelage of facilitators from the Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum and learned about the importance of looking after their mental health and knowing when their mental health needs additional support.

This includes becoming aware of resilience, growth and nurture, enrichment and healthy relationships.

Speaking at the ceremony, St. Eugene’s Principal, Mrs. Carol Duffy said she was very proud of all the pupils and the hard work they put into the programme.

“This fantastic programme will teach the children about the importance of looking after mental health as well as supporting their transition into secondary education as this is their final year in the primary sector.”

All the students completed an endorsed Level 1 Open College Network (OCN) qualification over the term of the programme.

Orlagh Robson, Training and Development Officer at BBHF added to the school principal’s sentiments saying the students should be very proud of their achievements.

“It’s an honour to be in a position to offer OCN qualifications to young people in our local community.

The Deputy Mayor Angela Dobbins addressing the attendance at Monday’s event.

“Young people completing our ‘Positive Me’ programme have reported that they are making healthier life choices, enjoy an increased feeling of self-worth, and can rely on more positive coping mechanisms.

“This also develops their own skills and confidence to manage their own mental health, and knowing when to get support. Well done to all the P7 pupils at St. Eugene’s today.”
