Sinn Féin Moor Representative Aisling Hutton has urged people in the city to support upcoming blood donation sessions.
A special blood donation event for the potentially life saving procedure will take place in the City Hotel on Monday, 24th April from 12.45pm to 4.00pm and 5.00pm to 7.30pm.
She said: "Blood donation is very important for the proper delivery of health care. Each year thousands of patients require blood transfusions in our hospitals, because they are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident.
“There is a lot of pressure placed on the Blood Transfusion service particularly over holiday periods .
“They have said that the need for blood is constant, with hundreds of patients in the north needing transfusions each week, but at this time of year it can be particularly difficult to maintain their blood stocks.
“I would urge anyone who can donate to go along to the blood donation session in Derry next week.”
Members of the public must register in advance to give blood at the event by calling 08085 534 653.
Monday's event is open to new and existing donors and a session will last around 40 minutes.
