Derry Court: Fine and disqualification for man who 'borrowed' his then partner's car

A man who 'borrowed' his then partner's car despite not having a driving licence has been fined more than £1,000 at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Caolan Maguire (24) of Farland Way in Derry admitted a series of driving offences that occurred on May 31 last.

The court heard that police were called to a three vehicle road traffic accident in Brookdale Park.

Police were told that the driver of one of the vehicles had made off and several witnesses identified him as Maguire.

Other witnesses described how the accident occurred after Maguire had cut a corner.

Forensic evidence was found in the car linking it to Maguire and the owner of the vehicle, the defendant's then partner, said he had no permission to drive it.

It was also found that Maguire did not have a driver's licence or insurance.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that his client had no driving record.

He said he had borrowed the car to go a message to the shop and accepted the accident occurred due to his careless driving.

The solicitor said that his client 'should not have been on the road.'

Maguire was fined £1,050 and disqualified from driving for 4 months.
