When police called at an address to speak to a man they noticed a strong smell of cannabis and could see drugs on a hall table Derry Magistrate's Court heard today.

John Paul Muldoon (22) of Galliagh Park in Derry admitted one charge of possessing cannabis on December 14 last.

The court heard that police were at the address for an unrelated matter and while talking to the defendant at the door they noticed the smell of cannabis and saw some drugs on the hall table.

Muldoon was arrested and handed over more cannabis to police and made full admissions and said the drugs were for personal use.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client was already serving a lengthy prison sentence and was anxious 'to put all this behind him'.

He said Muldoon had co-operated with police.

Muldoon was jailed for one month.
