Derry Court: Disqualification for man found drunk in charge

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how police were informed of a suspected drink driver and located a local man with slurred speech and smelling of alcohol.

Jeffrey David Power (36) of Philip Street in Derry admitted one charge of failing to provide a sample while drunk in charge of a vehicle in September last year.

The court heard that police were informed of a suspected drunk driver and went to locate the vehicle.

They located the vehicle at Garden City and the bonnet was still warm.

A witness told police a man had parked there and walked away towards the city centre.

Police attended an address and spoke to the defendant who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

He was asked to provide a breath sample but refused.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said it was the defendant who had phoned the police initially after he was the victim of an assault.

Power was disqualified for 3 months and fined £200.
