The junction leading onto Spencer Road at the bottom of Barnewall Place, Derry
SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has secured a review by the Department for Infrastructure of the collision history at Barnewall Place, following the site initially being categorised as “lower priority.”
Ms. McLaughlin said: “The recent dangerous incidents at Spencer Road caused considerable concern to everyone in the local area and highlighted to me the need for the Department for Infrastructure to step in and put in place measures to improve safety.
“After requesting a site meeting and safety assessment for Barnewall Place, I was initially disappointed by the assessment of the DfI western division that nothing could be done as the area was categorised as a “lower priority site” for the provision of bollards.
“Having raised this with the Permanent Secretary of the Department for Infrastructure, I am pleased that she has confirmed that the Department will now carry out a review of the wider collision history for the Spencer Road junction and its steep adjoining streets to assess what can be done.”
Commenting, Cllr. Sean Mooney said: “This is a very welcome step following dangerous crashes including two recent incidents, just days apart, that caused significant damage to a local business.
"I am very pleased that the SDLP has been able to secure this review from the Permanent Secretary and look forward to hearing its outcome.”
