Derry Court: Man receives suspended sentence following Christmas night assault on woman

An assault on Christmas night resulted in a local man getting a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Ben Sweeney (21) of Rockmills in Derry admitted assaulting a woman on December 25 last.

The court heard that police were called to Rockmills by security after an incident involving three people including the defendant had escalated.

When they arrived they were told that Sweeney had kicked a female 'forcefully' on the legs.

The woman would not co-operate with police but the incident had been captured on CCTV.

Initially Sweeney denied the assault claiming the woman had 'tripped over her own feet.'

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client accepted that the relationship was over.

He said he is sorry for the incident.

Sweeney was given a 3 month sentence suspended for 18 months.
