Derry Court: Conditional discharge for homeless man who stole mat to keep warm

A man who was homeless and stole a mat from the Translink depot in Foyle Street to keep warm has been given a conditional discharge at Derry Magistrate's Court.

Jordan Hazlett (27) of Ebrington Oaks in Derry admitted a charge of theft on March 24 last.

The court heard that around 5.30am Hazlett entered the bus depot and stole the mat.

This was captured on CCTV and when questioned Hazlett made full admissions and said he was homeless at the time and stole the mat to keep warm.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said his client had been found sleeping on the mat.

He said he had health issues and had taken the mat when he had been unable to get any bedding.

Hazlett was given a conditional discharge for a period of 18 months.
