The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Sandra Duffy, welcomed the German Ambassador to the UK to the Guildhall, during a special delegation visit to the city.
Ambassador Miguel Berger was accompanied by Dr Clemens Kohnen, Head of Political Affairs, from the German Embassy UK, Dr Franziska Hagedorn, Head of the UK Unit in Berlin and Honorary Consul Lubbeke.
Mayor Duffy showed the delegation around the City’s historic Guildhall before they embarked on a number of engagements.
The Mayor also took the opportunity to discuss the merits of doing business in Derry and Strabane, and highlighted the many benefits the region has to offer in terms of tourism, trade and investment.
Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Duffy said: “I was delighted to have the chance today to discuss the many positive aspects of living and working here in the North West, with our unique cross border location and our wonderful tourism offering.
“We talked about German and EU trade and investment, and the potential opportunities to strengthen connections between Germany and the NW City Region. It was a very positive and informative visit.”
On their arrival on Sunday, the German delegation enjoyed a tour of the City’s historic Walls, the Peace Bridge and Ebrington.
The engagement with the Mayor on Monday was followed by a meeting with representatives of the DiverseCity Community Partnership, where they discussed progress here and the role of the community sector in a post conflict society.
The German delegation were then invited to the Derry Chamber of Commerce where the focus shifted to business and trade opportunities, examining the possibilities arising within the post-Brexit trading environment.
