A man who left a vehicle in a dangerous position on a rural road has been fined a total of £1,300 at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

James Kirk (19) of Gortgare Ave in Greysteel admitted a series of driving offences including no licence or insurance and leaving the vehicle in a dangerous position on March 19 2021.

The court heard that police were called to a report of a vehicle abandoned on the Tamnaherin Road that was causing an obstruction.

The vehicle was found to be parked close to a sharp bend in the road and there was glass all over the road.

Eventually the defendant was identified as being the driver and was found to have no licence or insurance.

He denied the offences initially.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said the vehicle belonged to Kirk's friend and he had lost control on the sharp bend and the vehicle crashed.

He said his client then 'panicked' and left the scene.

Kirk was fined £1,300 and disqualified for 9 months.
