A 24 year-old man was jailed for ten months today after he was convicted of common assault, inflicting grievous bodily harm, criminal damage and jaywalking.

Cathal Moore of Drummond Manor, Limavady admitted the charges, which were committed on two separate dates, when he appeared before the town’s court.

The court heard that police were contacted by a man who stated that he had been assaulted by Moore on December 27.

The man claimed that he was along with friends when Moore approached him and swung for him, hitting him on the left eye.

The court heard that the injured party sustained a broken cheekbone and a black eye as a result of the incident.

When Moore was interviewed, he said he couldn’t remember assaulting the man.

The court also heard that a motorist contacted police on February 7 to report an incident of criminal damage.

The motorist claimed that he had been driving in the direction of Ballykelly when he had to stop the car as Moore, who was drunk, was standing in the middle of the Ballykelly Road.

Moore asked the driver for a lift to Ballykelly however when the motorist attempted to drive off, the defendant struck out and punched the windscreen of the car, causing a crack to form.

The injured party gave police a description of Moore, who was subsequently located at Catherine Street, Limavady.

When officers asked him about the incident, he told them that they wouldn’t be able to prove that he was involved.

When Moore was later interviewed, he said he remembered trying to walk to Ballykelly during the early hours of the morning and attempting to wave down cars but he had no recollection of punching the windscreen.

Barrister Dean Mooney said the issue in the cases was Moore’s consumption of alcohol.

Mr Mooney said that since these offences, Moore has been making efforts towards curbing his consumption of alcohol.

District Judge Liam McNally sentenced Moore to ten months in prison and fined him £125.
