Members of Junior McDaid House have expressed concerns at plans to close a post office in the Rosemount area of Derry.

Junior McDaid House spokesperson, Patrick Gallagher, said: "Junior McDaid House wish to express our concern at the recent announcement that the local Post Office in Park Avenue is set to close later this month.

"It was revealed last month that there were concerns over the future of the Post Office in Rosemount after it emerged that the current postmaster was set to give up the position.

"This comes a short time after the Post Office in Bishop Street announced they were due to close to facilitate a local pub.

“At a time when our communities are facing the onslaught of British led cuts by pro-establishment parties, the closure of local amenities cannot be accepted. These are vital services used day and daily by everyone in the community which we can’t afford to lose.

"We are aware that there are a number of applications put forward for consideration by the Post Office at this stage.

"No matter the outcome, Junior McDaid House will stand with our community against the closure of local amenities."
