A Limavady man told police he hoped someone would put Semtex under their car to blow them up, the town's court has heard.

Raymond Magee made the comments while police officers were speaking to one of his neighbours at 5.30pm on August 6.

The court heard that Magee was standing in the garden of his Gorteen Crescent home when he shouted 'police scumbags' to officers nearby. The court was told that Magee continued to shout comments, including 'up the Ra' and 'f**king scum' before officers took him aside to speak to him.

A short time later Magee continued to shout more abuse at officers. He also shouted: "I hope you get Semtex put under your car to blow you up" before sticking his finger up to police. Police later called to 46 year-old Magee's house to speak to him about the matter however he refused to come out.

When he did come out of the house a short time later, he shouted to police: "I'll blow you up you b*****ds and break your nose.  Don't forget to slide on." The court also heard that he told officers "I'm going to blow up my brother. Don't you say anything." Judge Liam McNally said that some of the comments that were made by Magee on the date in question were 'appalling and quite offensive'. "In 1985 you first appeared in this court. Here you are almost 30 years later still shooting your mouth off," said Judge McNally.

"I take the view that it's your alcoholism that allows you to shoot your mouth off. I really should send you to prison today but I am going to defer sentencing for six months." Magee is due back before the court on July 16.
