Massive amounts of waste are still being dumped at a number of sites in the city despite complaints being made to Derry City Council over the problem.
A large quantity of rubbish was recently left at a section of land close to the Criagavon Bridge, while dumping also continues to take place at the Glassagh area of Creggan.
Speaking about the issue, Sinn Fein Councillor Bridget Meehan said that she had reported the issue a month ago to Derry City Council.
“The council investigated the site and on determining the owner of the property, they passed the case to the Environmental Agency (NIEA) who falls under the remit of the Department for Regional Development.
“Just this week, I paid another visit to the site only to find that the waste had not been removed and that the road was still fully accessible. In fact, I discovered that even more rubbish had been dumped.
She added: “This is unacceptable and the site is a health and safety hazard. NIEA need to take action to ensure that the owner makes secure and safe this property.”
