Derry digital radio station, River Radio, has been named top digital station in Northern Ireland.

It has also been listed in the top 5 in the UK out of 400 entries for Digital Radio Station of the Year at the Community Radio Awards.

River Radio, launched in 2018, is a non-profit youth community radio station for Derry and the North West, catering to the city's young adults.

The station's coverage area includes the Cityside and Waterside, Ballykelly and Limavady.

River Radio is successful in being Northern Ireland’s First CDSP Ofcom License Radio station.

Speaking to Derry News, River Radio DAB Director, Gerard Doherty, said they are honoured to be recognised on a national level.

"It is such a positive thing going forward. It was really great to go over to England and fly the flag for Derry and put the city on the map for Networking," he said.

River Radio was Northern Ireland's only shortlisted station at the Community Radio awards.

The Community Radio Awards have been set up to celebrate community radio and all the hard work and time that the volunteers involved in community radio put into their stations, shows and communities.

Their awards are a judge-led process, with judges drawn from the community radio sector, academics, other radio associated areas and the 3rd sector.

Gerard continued: "To be shortlisted was amazing and especially the Top 5. We didn't win but it is something great to build on moving forward.

"It was great to be surrounded by industry representatives from across the UK and meeting people who have done this much longer than us; that was a good highlight for us.

"We will take what we have learned and build upon that. It was also a fantastic platform for our station.

"People knew who we were and those who didn't know us now do. We are on the national map for digital radio stations."

Gerard said alongside representing the city and Northern Ireland, it was great to represent the youth sector and promote greater community engagement going forward.

Gerard added: "Representing the youth community and wider community is an honour and we look forward to what the future holds for our station."
