A man who was said to have told he former partner 'I am going to crucify you' has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Richard Carlin (34) of Brookdale Park in Derry appeared charged with sending messages causing anxiety and distress on November 19.

A police officer connected the accused to the charge and opposed bail.

He told the court that the defendant was currently on bail for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault against the same alleged injured party.

The officer told the court that police were contacted by Carlin's former partner to say she had received 23 voice mails from the defendant over a short period.

Police listened to the voice mails and said they were all 'aggressive and abusive'.

In one message it was reported that Carlin said 'I will be waiting for you' in another he was alleged to have threatened to crucify her and also was said to have said 'you don't have much longer.'

The court heard that throughout the messages Carlin was said to have referred to the woman as 'a f-----g c--t'.

At interview Carlin made no comment but the court heard that the alleged victim recognised the voice and that the recordings had been seized.

Bail was opposed due to the fact that Carlin was on bail in relation to the same alleged injured party and police had 'no confidence' he would abide by conditions and the alleged victim felt scared of him.

The officer said that this relationship was over some two and a half years and it was not as if it was a fresh incident.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that this case would take some time to reach a conclusion.

He said it was 'with some trepidation' that he was asking for bail with a condition Carlin does not have access to any electronic device.

District Judge Barney McElholm said Carlin had been given bail on the first charges with a clear condition of no contact with the woman.

He said 'the court cannot tolerate' thus sort of behaviour and refused bail.

Carlin was remanded in custody to appear again on December 1.
