Mr Rodgers and Mr O’Kane will be fasting from Monday, March 2, 2026 at 12.30pm to Friday, March 6, at 12.30pm.
The aim of the fast is to raise awareness and funds for the plight of children in Gaza in partnership with Rise for Palestine Derry and Gaza Ground Aid Ireland.
A spokesperson for the groups said: "The number 96 is symbolic. It refers to Gate 96, one of the crossings into Gaza, which represents access to basic human needs such as food, clean water, and medical aid.
"Through this fast, we want to highlight how vital these essentials are for children’s survival and wellbeing," they added.
"We are also encouraging students to support the initiative in ways that are appropriate for them. Some students may choose to take part in the final 24 hours of the fast, but only if it is medically safe to do so and with full parental or guardian permission. There is no expectation or pressure on any student to fast.
"Students are very welcome to raise funds and show support even if they are not fasting, by sharing the page, encouraging donations, or contributing in other positive ways.
"This initiative is not political. It is about children, compassion, and basic human dignity. As a school community, we believe it is important to act with empathy and to help young people understand that even small actions can make a meaningful difference.
"All funds raised will support humanitarian efforts aimed at helping children and families affected by the crisis in Gaza. Funds will be going directly to Gaza via RISE for Palestine and Gaza Ground Aid. Thank you for your support, generosity, and solidarity."
