Ponderosa reaches new heights in new hit series 'How To Get To Heaven From Belfast'

Filming took place in the County Derry bar and restaurant.

Ireland’s Highest Bar and Restaurant, the Ponderosa has reached new heights after appearing in Lisa McGee’s new hit Netflix series of How To Get to Heaven From Belfast.

Eagle-eyed viewers of the new drama may have spotted the local landmark pub perched high in the Sperrin Mountains as the backdrop for a scene in the penultimate episode.

In episode seven the storyline of the dark comedy intensifies and the villainous characters played by Saoirse Monica Jackson (Derry Girls), Bronagh Gallagher (Brassic, Pulp Fiction) and Shauna Bray can be seen making a pitstop in The Hayshed to plot their next move – don’t worry, no spoilers here.

The Ponderosa, which celebrated its 10-year milestone under its current ownership in 2024, has long been a landmark destination for tourists and locals alike. Originally dating back to 1858 and renamed in the 1960s after the ranch in the classic US Western Bonanza, the venue today blends history with contemporary comfort.

Under the stewardship of the O’Donnell family, the business has flourished, expanding to include Paddy Joe’s pub, named after the owners grandfather, and The Hayshed function space, which hosts weddings, parties and special celebrations throughout the year. Visitors travelling from across Ireland and beyond often capture a photo beside the famous sign proclaiming Ireland’s Highest Pub at a scenic stop-off between Belfast and Donegal.

From hearty Irish food served seven days a wee, to music sessions and unforgettable celebrations in The Hayshed, the Ponderosa continues to reach new heights, now with a starring role to add to its story.

Owner Jill ODonnell said: “We’re delighted the Ponderosa featured in this new TV show created by Lisa McGee. Derry Girls has proved to be a huge tourism boost for the city, we hope her latest offering which showcases so many picturesque locations across Ireland will have the same effect.

“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built here over the past decade, and to see it included in a major television production is very special. We hope it encourages even more people to come and experience Ireland’s Highest Pub for themselves.”
