SDLP East Derry MLA Cara Hunter has welcomed proposals for a new social housing development on Main Street in Claudy, saying the scheme could play an important role in responding to local housing need.
The proposed development by Woven Housing Association, supported by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, would deliver 33 social homes. The scheme includes a mix of apartments and houses, as well as wheelchair-accessible accommodation, and has been designed to reflect identified need in the area.
Cara Hunter MLA said: “Across our constituency, I am meeting more and more people who are struggling to find a suitable and affordable home, whether that is young people hoping to stay in their own community, families who need appropriate space, or older and disabled residents looking for accessible housing. That is the reality of the housing pressures many people are facing.
“Good-quality social housing plays an important role in supporting strong, sustainable communities, and it is welcome that information on this proposed scheme is being shared at an early stage.
“The mix of homes being proposed reflects a range of housing needs, including provision for accessible accommodation, which is an important consideration in allowing people to live independently in their own community.
“Claudy is a proud, close-knit place. When delivered in the right way, developments like this can help sustain local services, support families to put down roots, and ensure people are not forced to leave the area simply because housing is unavailable.
“However, it is also important to be honest that 33 homes will meet only a fraction of the housing need in Claudy and the wider area. Too many people remain on waiting lists or stuck in unsuitable accommodation, and that cannot be resolved through one development alone. The Executive must do more to bring forward additional social and affordable housing if we are to genuinely meet demand.”
