TD Richard Boyd Barrett to speak at Derry public meeting

People Before Profit (PBP) will mark the 54th anniversary of Bloody Sunday with a public meeting titled 'One World, One Struggle: From the Bogside to Basra, Venezuela to Gaza'.

The meeting which will feature with Richard Boyd Barrett TD takes place on Saturday, January 31, in St Columb’s Hall at 7pm.

A spokesperson for PBP said: "We are delighted to welcome Richard back to Derry after he bravely overcame recent health challenges.

"Richard has been a relentless voice for the underdog, representing the constituency of Dún Laoghaire in Dáil Éireann since 2011. He is well-known for his passionate advocacy for social justice, for working class communities, standing firm against imperialism, and state violence.

"A socialist in the Internationalist tradition of James Connolly, he makes the connections between local struggles and global issues.

"People Before Profit commend Bloody Sunday families and campaigners for their continued pursuit of truth, accountability and justice. We encourage supporters to join the Bloody Sunday March Committee organised annual March for Justice on 2.30pm Sunday, February 1," added the spokesperson.

"It is important we march on Bloody Sunday in response to the abject failure to convict Soldier F.

"More than £4.3 million was spent by the British government to protect one of its killers. The lack of accountability is emblematic of the entire British justice system.

"We know Soldier F is guilty and so do those who have funded his defence and celebrated his acquittal.

"As we remember the victims of Soldier F and the British state on Bloody Sunday, we look out to the world and send solidarity from Derry to all who struggle for freedom," said the spokesperson.

Derry City and Strabane District councillor Shaun Harkin (PBP) said: "The massacre of Civil Rights marchers in Derry and the subsequent decades long cover-up is a stark example of the brutality of the British state.

"The echoes of the Bloody Sunday cover-up are heard with every lie told by those in power in London, Washington and Tel Aviv to excuse their crimes in Gaza.

"The same rotten system of power that protects the architects and culprits of Bloody Sunday allows those who massacred Palestinians in Gaza to escape accountability.Trump's assault on Venezuela, threats on Iran, Cuba, Colombia, Greenland, his ongoing support for Israel's barbarism and demands for unrestricted control over Ukraine's rare minerals, all underscore the need for a global anti-imperialist movement.

"There should be no more Bloody Sundays. No more massacres for empire. Not in Ireland, not in Gaza, not in Greenland, Venezuela or anywhere."
