Olympic gold medallist Hannah Scott MBE is set to receive the Freedom of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.
Coleraine’s Hannah Scott MBE will receive the Freedom of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council as an expression of the highest esteem in which she is held.
The honour is in recognition of her outstanding achievement winning a gold medal in the Women’s Quadruple Sculls, as part of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team, at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The motion, proposed by Alderman Yvonne Boyle and seconded by Cllr Amy Mairs, was unanimously agreed at a special Council meeting held on Tuesday, January 6.
Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, noted the inspiration Hannah has provided to young people across Causeway Coast and Glens saying: “It is fantastic to see Coleraine native Hannah Scott awarded with this remarkable accolade for her achievements in the 2024 Olympics.
“Hannah is only the second woman from Northern Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal, following Lady Mary Peters victory at the Munich Olympics in 1972.
“The honour is a fitting recognition of her success, and status as a role model to all our young people, especially young women and girls.”
Speaking after the meeting, Alderman Boyle said: “I am delighted that Council have agreed my motion to confer the Freedom of the Borough on Olympic gold medallist Hannah Scott MBE.
“This decision is about how proud we are, as a Borough, of Hannah and everything she has achieved. Winning her Olympic gold medal was a truly historic moment for our entire community.
“The Freedom of the Borough is our highest civic honour, and it is being bestowed in recognition of Hannah’s dedication, resilience and excellence.”
