Wanted: Farmers in Sperrins given opportunity to tell their story for unique new series

Councillor Fergal Leonard is encouraging farmers in the Sperrins area to take part in the series.

Sinn Féin Councillor Fergal Leonard is encouraging local input into a unique new series which is being produced to document the life of the small farm holder for this and future generations.

Cllr Leonard said: “This unique series is looking to interview a number of small farm holders, over the age of 65 with holdings of around 25 acres. With nearly two fifths of small farm holders over this age and with few with plans for inheritance, this way of life is fast disappearing.

“The ‘small farm holding’ has dominated the landscape of the Sperrins and Glenelly Valley back into the mists of time and has been the economic social and cultural backbone of the communities here.

“As such, it would be fitting if there was a local input into this series so that the reality of small farmer life in this part of the world is documented for this and future generations.

“So, if you are a 'small farmer' or know a 'small farmer' that would be interested in helping in any way to tell this story, email smallfarmseries@gmail.com or call Brendan Phelan (of Tile Media) on 00353 87 2925294 or contact myself and I can forward you details.”
