Department for Infrastructure issues update on Kilrea bridge

The bridge was closed last month after a safety inspection identified vertical and diagonal cracking on a retaining wall

Councillor hits out as people 'selfishly' ignore bridge closure

The Kilrea Bridge is currently closed.

The Department for Infrastructure says it is currently working on a temporary solution to allow the Kilrea Bridge to be reopened as soon as possible.

The bridge, which carries the B64 Bann Road over the River Bann, was closed last month after a safety inspection identified vertical and diagonal cracking on the retaining wall located at the south-west end of the structure.

In a statement today, DfI said: "The Kilrea Bridge remains closed in the interest of public safety due to concerns over the structural stability of a retaining wall.

"The Department is working at pace to consider a temporary solution which would allow the bridge to be reopened as soon as possible.

"Investigatory work has already started on site and steps have been taken to accelerate the preparation of the procurement for a solution.

"The Department will provide an update on the timescales soon. We fully appreciate the impact of the closure and apologise to the local community, including businesses in the area, and all road users for the inconvenience caused."
