Participants will get a chance to enjoy a variety of accessible activities including floating wheelchairs.
Muscular Dystrophy UK has joined forces with the Mae Murray Foundation and National Trust to host an inclusive beach day tomorrow (Saturday, June 21) at Portstewart Strand.
The leading charity for more than 110,000 children and adults in the UK living with one of over 60 muscle wasting and weakening conditions is excited to welcome children and adults living with a muscle wasting or weakening condition, their families and carers to the free event open to everyone across Northern Ireland.
On the day participants will get a chance to enjoy a variety of accessible activities including supported swimming, beach wheelchairs, floating wheelchairs, interactive sensory play tables, drums and more.
Graham Hawthorne, Advocacy and Information Officer for Northern Ireland at Muscular Dystrophy UK said: “We’re proud to host this inclusive beach day in partnership with the Mae Murray Foundation, which allows people from our community living with a muscle wasting and weakening condition to enjoy a day at the beach by making it fully accessible.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to connect with others living with a neuromuscular condition to fully immersive themselves without having any restrictions. Whilst taking in the beautiful surroundings of Portstewart Strand, a stunning National Trust site cared and protected for everyone to enjoy.”
Portstewart Strand been recognised as an Inclusive Beach since June 2022, following the opening of a Changing Places facility that was completed in partnership with Mae Murray Foundation, with help from DAERA funding.
National Trust is proud to work with partners to make the places they care for on the north coast more inclusive and ensure people of all ages and abilities can enjoy them.
The event will run 2pm to 4pm at Portstewart Strand, 118 Strand Road, Portstewart, BT55 7PG.
There will be a standard disabled toilet and Changing Places toilet onsite on the day and free parking available.
