The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has been awarded an honorary degree by a US university.

Councillor Lilian Seenoi Barr received the honorary doctorate from Worcester State University in Massachusetts.

The SDLP councillor travelled to Boston earlier this week to accept the degree and take part in a number of other engagements.

During her visit, the Mayor enjoyed a tour of the university and had lunch with business leaders from the Worcester Chamber of Commerce.

She also enjoyed a reception hosted by the President of Worcester State.

Ahead of her visit, the Mayor described receiving the honorary doctorate as 'the grand finale' of her trip.

“I'll be rocking my Maasai clothes the whole time, proud to represent where I come from and where I now call home,” she said.
