SDLP Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has called for action to address ongoing safety concerns at the junction between Whitehouse Road and Upper Galliagh Road.
 
The Department for Infrastructure has agreed to refresh road markings on this route but Mr Durkan said the impact this will have on overall road safety, remains to be seen.
The Foyle MLA commented: “For several years I have raised ongoing concerns at Whitehouse Junction particularly recently with increased congestion and safety risks due to surrounding development works and road closures.
“This is a nightmare of a junction where several accidents have occurred, primarily for motorists attempting to turn on to the Whitehouse but DFI has continually long-fingered addressing the issue saying it will be addressed when the Buncrana Road is being upgraded. A project that's been on the horizon for as long as I can remember.
“DFI Roads has now agreed to refresh the directional road markings at the junction, which I hope will go some way in improving visibility, driver awareness, and overall safety in the short term but it doesn't address the design that causes most confusion and danger.
“It's clear longer-term solutions are still needed. I’ll continue to push for those and ensure this junction is made safer for all road users.”
