Works to create a new slip road at the Castledawson Roundabout on the A6 Glenshane Road are expected to commence in the coming weeks and will take approximately two months to complete.
The works will see the creation of a new slip-lane on the Glenshane Road side of the roundabout towards Castledawson which will create a separate approach from the Glenshane Road to the Castledawson road and towards the village of Castledawson.
It is anticipated that this will allow traffic to flow more quickly from the Glenshane Road towards Castledawson especially at peak times.
Mid-Ulster District Sinn Féin Councillors Ian Milne and Donal McPeake have been liaising with the Department for Infrastructure to achieve better and more safer traffic throughput on this roundabout for some time.
Speaking to the County Derry Post, the Moyola based Councillors welcomed the scheme.
Councillor Ian Milne said: “The creation of this slip road on to Castledawson Road will hopefully assist in reducing the lengthy tailbacks at this location particularly in the mornings with commuters travelling between Derry and Belfast. There will inevitably be some delays during the construction of the new slip-road. However DfI have assured me that these delays will be kept to a minimum.”
Councillor Mc Peake added: “We will continue to work with DfI in the future to explore further improvements that could be made to this extremely busy roundabout in order to improve road safety and to ease traffic throughput on the roundabout itself. Anything that can be done to improve the current situation is to be very much welcomed.”
