Limavady's Catherine Street is expected to remain closed for some time today following yesterday evening's fire due to the discovery of asbestos.

Eight fire appliances, one fire command unit and an aerial appliance attended the scene of the blaze which broke out at the former Sweet nightclub on Catherine Street just after 5.40pm.

The building has been derelict for some years.

Yesterday evening, as more than 50 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control, diversions were put in place and those living in the vicinity were asked to keep their windows and doors shut.

It is understood Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has been informed that asbestos has been discovered in the building.

An investigation is set to begin today to determine the cause of the fire.
