Frank Owens generously donated £1,110.09 from their Christmas Bauble fundraiser to mental health charity.
Much loved Limavady pub, Frank Owens generously donated £1,110.09 from their Christmas Bauble fundraiser to mental health charity Limavady Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide.
The local campaign saw the popular bar join forces with the community organisation to fundraise for essential suicide awareness training in the hospitality industry.
Customers contributed the vital funds over the seasonal period by purchasing a unique bauble displaying the name Frank Owens to train front-line hospitality staff to help identify patrons in need.
Terence Owens, from Frank Owens’ Bar, explained how the important fundraiser came about:
“We have learnt post covid is that the true value of a pub was probably not fully recognised before.
“This social hub plays an important role in people’s wellbeing and for some, can be their only form of company.
“We decided this year to support one of our local charities “LIPS” and in association with them, we have created this opportunity to raise awareness for their cause.”
The campaign recognises the significant role that traditional pubs play in supporting those who feel alone or hopeless and how their staff can be a vital lifeline for customers struggling with mental health.
Mary Molloy, LIPS Project Manager, expressed her thanks to Frank Owens:
“Suicide is preventable and not inevitable, however, the majority of people who lose their lives through suicide never see a mental health professional.
“At LIPS, we know the value of establishing a community support network and making suicide prevention everyone’s business to ensure that any cry for help, in any setting is heard.
“LIPS are always open to exploring new ways of reaching those most in need, and after consultation with stakeholders and local businesses, we have identified the potential role that hospitality staff can play locally in suicide prevention.
“Through the generous support of Frank Owens’ Christmas Bauble campaign and in partnership with the Western Trust Suicide Prevention & Emotional Health and Wellbeing Team, LIPS will roll out Suicide Intervention and Prevention training in the coming months.
“It will teach hospitality staff how to spot the signs of a person suffering through suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis, how to react, and how to get the person to safety.”
“LIPS would like to extend our thanks to Frank Owens and to everyone who supported this campaign by buying a bauble.”
LIPS continue to support those in the community who need help and assistance with their mental health by introducing new initiatives for 2024.
