A man who has 'an appalling record' has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for committing  offences two days after receiving a suspended sentence.

Paul Farren (33) of no fixed abode admitted a series of public order offences including indecent behaviour that occurred on October 27.

A police officer told the court that police received a report of a man begging at the old Bank of Ireland building on Strand Road.

This was captured by CCTV and a description given to police.

Before police arrived the defendant crossed the road and urinated in the street.

When police arrived Farren became abusive and shouted 'f--k the PSNI' and other obscenities.

He also resisted police while being arrested.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the defendant had made a 'very poignant interview' when he asked police 'what do you want me to do die on the streets?'

The solicitor said that the defendant was a homeless on street drinker who wanders the streets as he is barred from every bar and shop in the town.

District Judge Ted Magill said that the defendant had 177 previous convictions.

He said these offences were committed days after Farren received a suspended sentence and this was something he could not ignore.

He imposed a sentence of five months in prison.
