Man fined £500 and disqualified for 12 months for dangerous driving

Rowdy scenes at Derry Magistrate's Court as anti lock down protesters disrupted proceedings

Derry Magistrate's Court

A man has appeared in Derry Magistrates Court charged with dangerous driving.

Darren Dunn, 24, of Claremont Street in Derry was convicted of one charge of dangerous driving on June 9 last year.

The court was told that the defendant was identified by two different police officers driving in the area of between the Buncrana Road and Elsgh Road.

Police officers pursued the vehicle that made of at speed and while the exact speed was not recorded it was estimated that Dunn was driving at over one hundred miles an hour.

The court also heard that Dunn was driving in the middle of the road at one stage causing another car to mount a grass verge to avoid a collision.

Defence solicitor Michael Donaghey told the court that Dunn had been behaving himself in the fourteen months since the offence and that he needed his car to drive his mother and two children.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that he was convicting Dunn of dangerous driving but other charges were similar so he withdrew them.

Dunn was given a £500 fine and disqualified for 12 months.
