Translink confirm extended late night weekend Eglinton bus service

The extension of the late night Translink weekend bus service to Eglinton, has been welcomed.

Local residents have been lobbying for the extension of the service.

From Monday, October 23 additional services will depart from Derry city centre bus station to Eglinton at 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday at 10.00pm.

SDLP Faughan councillor Declan Norris said: “The extension of the late-night weekend bus services to Eglinton is extremely welcome and I thank Translink for listening when I approached them on behalf of local residents. Increasing rural services has been a significant priority for me and hopefully this is the start of enhanced services for people living in these areas.

“Given the increasing difficulty in obtaining taxis in Derry these new routes will enable people living in the Eglinton area to spend more time in our city centre on a weekend evening, with knock on benefits for local businesses like bars and restaurants.

"Given the lack of transport options available I know that many people don’t even consider visiting the city centre due to the difficulty in getting home and I hope these services will go some way to alleviating that issue. This service will also benefit people working in the city centre to later in the evening.

“I am aware that there are a number of other rural areas locally in need of late-night weekend services and I will continue to push Translink for progress on these issues. I will also keep raising issues around the needs of elderly and disabled passengers so that we can ensure local services and the way they are delivered meet their needs.”
