Derry girl Róise Ní Mhurchú has brought home two gold medals at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2023 in Mullingar.
Speaking to Derry News following her amazing success, Róise who won the Amhránaíocht Ghaeilge (Irish singing) and Portaireacht (lilting), admitted she was “shocked and delighted” by her achievement.
“There was such a high standard of music and songs in both my competitions,” said the former Thornhill College student. “But I just went in and told the story and had fun.
“I knew I had performed the best I could, so I tried not to think about the adjudication too much.
“It was great to listen to all the other competitors, lots of whom are my friends. I couldn't believe it when my name was called out for first place!
“I am so grateful for all the support I have had from my family and friends. It feels incredible to bring not one but two trophies back to Derry,” said Róise.
Róise also remarked on the great success of Ulster competitors at this year’s All-Ireland Fleadh. “There is definitely an ongoing resurgence in Ulster’s traditional arts” she added.
Róise, who is from the Culmore area of Derry, was reared with Irish by her parents musicians and singers, Caitríona and Marcas Ó Murchú.
The family was understandably "very proud of Róise's achievement" in taking two gold medals home in what is now regarded as an international competition.
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann has branches worldwide and hundreds of competitors travelled from Europe, USA and even Latin America to participate. More than half a million people attended the week long Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which came to Derry in 2013.
Róise also is a fiddle player, whistle player and singer in Irish and English, having represented CCÉ Baile na gCailleach, based at Studio 2, in several Ulster and All Ireland fleadhanna in recent years.
The 18 year-old student is now looking forward to teaching in a Gaelscoil to pass on her "love for all things Irish" and hopes to attend St Mary's College of Education in Belfast in September.
