'Current negotiations with a potential new contractor are at a late stage and are very positive' - Cllr Emmet Doyle.

Negotiations to secure a new contractor to take over the Racecourse Medical GP practice are "looking positive" according to Derry City and Strabane District councillor, Emmet Doyle (Aontú).

The Ballyarnett councillor described the negotiations as being at an "advanced stage".

Cllr Doyle added: "I have been engaging with the Department of Health every week since news was announced that the current contractor was handing back its contract.

"I know staff and patients have been nervous around the uncertain situation especially given the current contractor will end their contract in around a months time.

"This morning I had a further conversation with officials and have been told that the current negotiations with a potential new contractor are at a late stage and are very positive.

"I've also had a discussion around the ability of the Western Trust to step in and take over the practice as a last resort.  I've been informed that a long lead in time for this wouldn't be needed as another Trust was able to step in and take on a similar contract in under a week. I will continue to engage with the Department to secure this much used GP practice in my area and keep staff and patients updated."
