Over 40 tyres where dumped at Lis na Gra woods
Donegal County Council is being called on to take action to discourage illegal action at a beauty spot near Muff after tyres were dumped in the area in recent days.
Local councillor Terry Crossan has called for the council to place CCTV cameras at Lis na Gra after more than 40 tyres were dumped at the side of the road in the middle of the woods.
The incident is the latest at the woods in recent years which attracts visitors due to its red squirrel population and birdlife.
Cllr Crossan said he believed the tyres were dumped on Monday morning in a “brazen” act which took place in daylight.
The tyres have since been removed by the council.
The Sinn Féin councillor said he has contacted gardaí and requested they source CCTV footage to try to identify a suspicious vehicle that was seen in the area on Monday morning.
“We have been continually calling for cameras in places where there are continuous instances of illegal dumping,” he said.
“Lis na Gra is a very popular area for people out walking and there have been continuous incidents of this type of behaviour. I think the best way to deal with this is to identify who the perpetrators are and take action against them.
“It costs a lot of money to clear up illegal dumping. Tyres have to be properly disposed of and that is at a cost to the taxpayers of Inishowen.”
