Possible closure of Bridge Street GP service is another 'devastating blow' to Derry GP services

Responding to the uncertainty regarding the future of Bridge Street GP service, People Before Profit councillor for The Moor Maeve O'Neill said: "The possible closure of the Bridge Street GP service is another devastating blow.

"The decision to hand back the contract to the Trust will further decimate access to health care for the poorest and most vulnerable people in our community.

"People in Derry already have worse health outcomes than almost anywhere else in these Islands.

"Our healthcare system simply could not cope if Bridge Street closed.

"Already we are seeing huge pressures on A+E and Out of Hours Services as people struggle to get GP appointments and are eventually left with little choice but to go to the hospital.

"We cannot lose any more GP services. People Before Profit will fight to stop any possible closure of both the Shantallow and Bridge Street surgeries.

"We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the Trust and Department of Health.

"The destruction of our NHS cannot be allowed to continue.

"Stormont has failed the Health Service. They failed it when there was an Executive and now they have totally abandoned all responsibility.

"The NHS belongs to the people. People Before Profit will fight tooth and nail not just to save our Health Service but to see that it gets the resources it desperately needs."
