A short Solidarity Vigil for those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Northern Syria is taking place in the city.

The event will take place tonight (Tuesday, February 7) in Derry's Guildhall Square at 6.00pm. it has been organised by the Derry Anti War Coalition in conjunction with local human rights activist, Hilda Orr.

will stage a short vigil tonight in solidarity with the victims of the earthquakes that have struck and Northern Syria. 

Speaking about the Vigil, Davy McAuley of the Derry Anti War Coalition said: "Almost all of the Syrian refugees in Derry come from the North of the Country. The most war ravaged areas have now been further devastated by earthquakes .

"I have been in contact with the local Syrian community and tragically all of them have lost relatives in the disaster.

"It's important that our friends and neighbours from Syria do not feel alone and isolated at this time. 

"So we call on the people of Derry to come out and show their support and love for those going through such incredible trauma."


After the vigil Foyle Vineyard in the old Rosemount Factory will be open for hot drinks and the opportunity to spend some time offering support and friendship to those affected by the situation in Syria and Turkey.
